BYCATCH REDUCTION TRAINING AMONG OFFSHORE FISHERMEN
We enlisted more than 22 hundred artisanal fishing boats along Cox’s Bazar and South central coast. We trained 192 fishermen captain for bycatch reduction and monitoring bycatch at offshore location. Training was conducted at Cox’s Bazar, St, Martin Island, Teknaf, Samlapur, Cepotkhali, Moheskhali and Sonadia Island. Training included lecture and presentation and documentaries show on sea turtle and marine underwater biodiversity, the techniques of bycatch reduction in the world. Fishermen were provided with ID guide, T-shirts, Fishermen were provided with measuring taps, ID guide, information and education materials package, T-shirt, scissors(to cut nets to release entangled turtle). We discussed on sea turtle in Bay of Bengal & nesting along Bangladesh coast, ecological role of sea turtle, bycatch intensity & fishermen’s experience. Discussed on sea turtle identification, data collection procedure in offshore areas and discussed the reduction of bycatch and use of TED (Turtle Excluder Device).
